vCard 3.0, 4.0 and MECARD
vCard is the standard for contact data: BEGIN:VCARD, VERSION, FN for the full name, ORG for the organisation, TEL and EMAIL for channels, URL for the website. Version 4.0 handles UTF-8 more directly; MECARD is an older, compact Japanese format still found on legacy business cards. The scanner understands both families.
Why not just use the contacts app? Because on a laptop there is no camera app with vCard support, and because you often only want the raw values — for a CRM, an invoice or an email. That is what the field view is for.
Why your images never leave the device
The decoder is JavaScript running in your browser. Camera frames are drawn into a canvas and read there; uploaded images are read through FileReader. There is no upload endpoint for image data. That is an architectural decision, not a slogan: the application has no route that accepts image content.
To improve the tool we store anonymous counters only — detected format, payload category (Wi-Fi, product code and so on), interface language, and whether decoding succeeded. No decoded content, no filenames, no IP-based profiling. Scan history lives in your browser’s localStorage and is deleted with one click.
A safety note on contact codes
A vCard can contain URLs. Do not open them blindly just because they sit on a business card. The scanner shows the link destination separately and flags shortened or punycode-based domains before you click.
FAQ
Perguntas frequentes
What is a vCard?
A standard contact format that can be stored in a QR code: name, organisation, phone, email and optionally address or website.
Can I save the vCard directly?
You can copy every field. Writing straight into the contacts app depends on the operating system and is deliberately outside a browser scan.
What is MECARD?
An older, compact contact format popular in Asia. The scanner recognises it and shows the same fields.
Is contact data transmitted?
No. Parsing happens locally; no server accepts contact payloads.
Why are some fields missing?
Not every vCard contains every property. We show exactly what the code holds and do not treat absent values as errors.
